Corttany Brooks joined CoilLaw as an Associate Attorney in the summer of 2020. Prior to joining the firm, Corttany served as a Deputy Prosecutor in Indianapolis, Indiana. As a prosecutor, her practice focused on special victims’ cases, primarily crimes of domestic violence. She has experience as a trial attorney in both criminal and civil law matters.
Corttany was born and raised in Indiana. She graduated with her B.S. in Journalism from Ohio University. She then went on to obtain her J.D. from Indiana University Maurer School of Law. Corttany is licensed to practice in both Indiana and Utah. Out of the office, she enjoys exploring the great outdoors of Utah.

Kris Brown is a Senior Paralegal with CoilLaw, joining the firm in July of 2018. Her experience and duties provide litigation support to the CoilLaw attorneys. She assists with preparation and filing of pleadings, correspondence with clients, preparation of discovery, organization of case files and trial preparation, scheduling and calendaring hearings and mediation and preparing financial declarations. Prior to joining CoilLaw, Kris served as a senior paralegal for two major law firms in Washington, D.C. and another in Portland, Oregon with the intellectual property practice group. She earned her paralegal certificate from the Washington Online Learning Institute, under graduate from the University of Utah and Associate Degree from College of Eastern Utah. She is a member of the National Paralegal Association (NALA).
In her spare time, Kris enjoys traveling, scrapbooking and quilting. Most of all she loves spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren as often as possible.
Jill L. Coil was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. She graduated with honors from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. She received her Juris Doctorate in Houston Texas at Texas Southern University where she met and married her husband. She is dually licensed in both Texas and Utah where she has focused her practice on Family and Criminal Law. Jill founded CoilLaw in December of 2014 with the goal of empathizing, protecting, and advocating for families through legal representation. She has received many awards in Utah for her on-going work in family law cases and her advocation for her clients. She is actively engaged in her community through volunteer work and is a participant in the Family Bar Section in Utah and Texas. She is a mother of four and when not fighting for her clients, Jill loves to watch movies and travel with her family to Disneyland.

Sherri has always enjoyed being an Office Administrator, working primarily in the banking and publishing forums, until 10 years ago when she landed her first “Family Law Firm” job. She has been hooked ever since. Helping people navigate through one of the most difficult times of their lives with professionalism and understanding is something she takes great pride in.
Born in Texas, but Utah is the place she calls home. She loves curling up with a good book and long walks, but her greatest joy is spending time with her husband, 2 kids, and 4 amazing grandkids, the highlight of her life.
T.R. Morgan grew up in Northern Utah playing high school basketball, winning at board games, and watching tv when he wasn’t reading. After serving an LDS mission to Brazil, he attended the University of Utah and graduated with a political science degree. He then went on to receive his Juris Doctorate from the SJ Quinney School of Law. During law school, T.R. worked full-time with the Internal Revenue Service as a tax examiner and legal intern. T.R. started his legal career working with renowned Ogden Attorney Bob Echard, and, after a few years, started his own general law practice. T.R. has litigation experience in most areas of law, specializing in family law and probate.
Most recently, T.R. served as a Domestic Relations Commissioner in the Second Judicial District Court. His experience wearing the black robe gave him the opportunity to interact with and guide litigants and attorneys through the Shakespearian tempest that domestic litigation can be, presiding over more than 10,000 hearings. He is most proud of, and grateful for, the high marks he received from attorneys during his annual reviews.
T.R. met his wife in high school and started dating after graduation. They have been married since 1997 and have five children. Outside of the office, T.R. enjoys traveling, cheering for the Utes, and watching and discussing tv and movies. Gabrielle Jones was raised in neighboring Cottonwood Heights, Utah and completed her undergraduate education at Utah Valley University. During her undergrad, Gabi started UVU’s first anarchist club, interned for a Utah Senator, completed a study abroad program in Nice, France, and volunteered for the small claims court as a mediator. She also met her husband and got married at the tender age of twenty. After much convincing from her political science professors, Gabi decided to attend law school.
She recently graduated from the University of Oregon School of Law, located in Eugene, Oregon. During law school, Gabi interned for the American Civil Liberties Association of Utah, externed for the Honorable Judge Ann Aiken of the U.S. District Court of Oregon, and gave birth to her son, Atticus. After law school, Gabi moved back to Utah to be closer to family and to serve the people of her home state. She began her legal career providing low cost legal services to low income and at-risk populations all over the state of Utah.
Gabi was recently hired as an Associate Attorney for CoilLaw. She is an empathetic and passionate advocate for her clients. Gabi has a twin brother, loves Harry Potter and Jane Austen, and enjoys a weekly session of Dungeons and Dragons with her family and close friends every week.
Jessica Laspina is a paralegal at CoilLaw. Her tasks—among many others—are to keep track of deadlines; keep documents and files organized; schedule meetings, mediations, and court dates; finalize and file documents with the court; produce discovery; and ensure that clients have complete and accurate records of filings with the court. Jessica began her career in litigation in 2013 and has extensive experience with criminal defense and family law.
Jessica was raised in Henderson, Nevada, and then moved to Utah in 2011. She was raised by a single mom, after her parents’ divorce when she was a young age. This has given her empathy to other families in similar situations. Jessica’s goal in her work is to help clients navigate the extremely rough road of family law. Her patience in helping clients process hard emotions while focusing on the task at hand makes her an invaluable member of the CoilLaw team.
Her greatest joy is her daughter, Leah. They are huge Disney fans and try to escape to Disneyland as much as they can.
Kelly J. Baldwin
Kelly J. Baldwin is a family law attorney who joined Coillaw in 2022. Kelly attended J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University and graduated in 2017. During law school, Kelly had the opportunity to clerk for Justice Himonas on the Utah Supreme Court and work as a research assistant focusing on tribal law issues.
After graduating, Kelly began practicing family law and general litigation. She focuses on securing efficient, effective, and satisfactory solutions for her clients, striving to ensure they feel informed at every stage of their legal matters.
When not practicing law, Kelly stays busy with her two young sons and golden retriever. She loves to stay active by playing ultimate frisbee and pickleball. She continues to stay involved in the community as an assistant coach for the Brigham Young University Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team.
Stephanie Christiansen has been working in the legal field in various capacities for over 15 years. She started working for CoilLaw in April of 2022 as a paralegal. Stephanie is currently attending school to obtain a paralegal degree and will be finished in the Spring of 2023. She grew up a little all over the place, which led to her desire to see as much of the world as she can. She is a newlywed and is now the proud stepmom to her husband’s two children and Nana to her two grandbabies.
Stephen J. Oliphant joined Coil Law, LLC after managing his own criminal defense practice in Salt Lake City. Stephen has broad experience working with clients on criminal, family, and domestic issues and consistently gets favorable results in court. A native of North Carolina, Stephen came to Utah for his education and the outdoors.
Before law school, Stephen had a knack for politics—working in Congress, managing a Senate race in Utah, and lobbying for small businesses. During law school, Stephen pursued many experiences such as teaching high school civics classes, working with displaced refugees through the citizenship process, interning for a Utah judge, and participated in Moot Court in which he was awarded Best Brief.
Since being with CoilLaw, LLC, Stephen receives consistently favorable settlement and trial results for our clients. Stephen is experienced and aggressive in court but understands that crafting solutions for clients often gets the best results and reduces ongoing family conflict.
Stephen recently married his wife Nysse who is a farm manager at a local farming high school. The two are outdoor and weekender enthusiasts who enjoy climbing, biking, and skiing throughout the Mountain West.
Erin Rosado is a Paralegal at CoilLaw. Erin holds a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from the University of Utah and has worked in litigation for over 12 years. Samantha E. Frazier
Samantha E. Frazier is an Associate Attorney at CoilLaw, LLC in private practice. Samantha is a native Texan. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and her Doctor of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law Houston. Samantha’s practice encompasses the representation of a diverse client base in the resolution of complex legal disputes. Her practice covers various Family Law legal issues, including child custody, divorce, adoptions, and child support enforcement. Samantha fervently tries cases to verdict in state court, the bench, and juries. Samantha practiced Family Law in Texas for over a decade, then moved to Utah in 2021. Samantha believes that “Paying it Forward” is the only way to be successful in life and that giving back to the community is fundamental to making a difference. She is a member of the State Bar of Texas and Utah State Bar. Abigail W. Brown was raised in Centerville, Utah, and completed her undergraduate education at Brigham Young University. Throughout her schooling, she discovered a love of people and social systems, as well as a love of travel during a quintessential college study abroad through Europe. She graduated with a degree in Sociology and decided to continue her education in law school.
During her time at BYU Law School, Abigail enjoyed planning events for the school’s 6th-grade mentoring program, interning with Utah’s Fourth District Office of Guardian ad Litem, and being an editor on the BYU Law Review. She loved learning about the intersection of law and family, and practiced effective communication skills in classes such as negotiation, mediation, and public speaking. During law school, she also married her high school sweetheart.
Abigail interned with CoilLaw during her 3L year and accepted an offer to work with them after graduating from law school. When not working, Abigail enjoys traveling with her husband, playing board games with their families, making frivolous spreadsheets, and reading any fiction book series she can get her hands on.
Andrew Fox was born and raised in North Salt Lake, Utah. He earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics from the University of Utah followed by a J.D. from the S.J. Quinney College of Law, where he served on the Executive Board of the Utah Law Review and graduated
in 2016. During his time in law school, Andrew interned for the Honorable Deno Himonas of the Utah Supreme Court. After graduating, Andrew has enjoyed diverse opportunities as an attorney, handling cases in employment litigation, insurance defense, medical malpractice defense, and family law.
Andrew joined CoilLaw in April 2023. In this role, he provides personalized and comprehensive counsel to clients to ensure that their needs and the needs of their family are met. When not working, Andrew enjoys attending sporting events, concerts, snowboarding, golfing, and passionately supporting University of Utah athletics.
Sara Ruebush is from Rexburg, Idaho. She graduated with a bachelor’s in English from Brigham Young University-Idaho in 2018, and she plans to continue her education with a master’s in Social Work. Sara is passionate about helping people improve their lives. She also enjoys a good book or movie, spending time with friends and family, and hiking in Utah’s beautiful mountains.
Luke A. Shaw was raised in an Air Force family, but primarily raised in Spokane, WA. After serving an LDS mission in upstate New York, he pursued an undergraduate degree in Business Management. After some time working with his brother’s family law practice in Grand Rapids, MI, he obtained his Juris Doctorate Degree from Michigan State University College of Law. After graduation, he found himself in Arizona where he joined the Arizona State Bar and married his wife.
Luke Shaw joined the Utah State Bar in 2015 and joined COIL LAW shortly thereafter. Since that time, he has been an active member of the Family Law Section of the Utah State Bar. He has dedicated his efforts to ensure the best interests of his clients are served in and out of the courtroom. When he is not advocating for his clients, Luke spends his time with his wife, son, and two dogs travelling and supporting Michigan State University Athletics.

Sterling R. Swank was born in Utah but had the opportunity to live all over the country including time spent in Tennessee, Georgia, Washington State and most recently in Iowa. Sterling received his bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Utah. After graduating from the U he packed up his bags and moved to the Midwest. Three years later he received his Juris Doctorate from Drake University Law School in Des Moines, Iowa.
After graduating from law school, Sterling made the trip back to Utah and joined the Utah State Bar in 2019 and then CoilLaw as an Associate Attorney shortly after. Prior to becoming a part of the CoilLaw team, Sterling worked in the Drake Legal Clinic providing legal services for criminal defense clients and to young people facing juvenile delinquency charges.
Sterling has a passion for the legal system and ensuring the best outcomes for his clients and their families. In his off-time Sterling loves spending time outdoors camping, hiking, or taking a scenic ride on his motorcycle.
Paul Wyner was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated with honors from Southern Utah University with a Bachelors of Arts in History Education. He received his Masters in Business Administration at Westminster College. Paul’s previous experience has been in Healthcare Administration for the largest health systems in Utah, including Intermountain Healthcare, University of Utah Healthcare, and Revere Health. He is actively involved in the community through volunteer work. He is a father of five. When he is not working, he enjoys watching sporting events, especially the Atlanta Braves and the Green Bay Packers.
Maelle (mai ⧫ el) Dieffenbach was born and raised in Arles, France. Wanting to see the world, when the opportunity to move to the United States after high school presented itself, she did not hesitate and embarked on her immigration journey. She first went to Pennsylvania to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology from Lycoming College. While there she had the opportunity to intern with Lycoming County Public Defender, and to start taking legal writing classes. All these experiences helped confirm her long-held desire to become an attorney.
In 2018, she moved to Illinois to attend law school at the University of Illinois. During law school she participated in Moot Court in which she was awarded Best Respondent Brief, and eventually became one of the coaches for the competition. She also spent most of her law school time volunteering and interning with a non-profit organization providing legal services to low-income immigrants. Maelle took the Utah Bar Exam in July 2021 and joined CoilLaw a few months later.
In her free time, she loves to travel and explore the outdoors with her husband and dog. If not outside, she can usually be found cooking and baking some authentic French meals.

Alex Maynez was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, but was raised in Burbank, California. He attended the University of Southern California and majored in Public Administration, graduating cum laude. He worked for the City of Los Angeles and the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Leaving the big city he moved his small family to attend the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University. He interned with the Colorado Rural Legal Services providing legal assistance to numerous migrant farmworkers in Southeastern Colorado. Shortly after graduation he worked with migrant farmworkers in Utah, specifically assisting them in ensuring quality education for their kids while they were in the fields and providing legal assistance and representation in labor disputes, landlord tenant issues, criminal matters, and almost anything else they brought through the door whether municipal, administrative, state, or federal forums.
Alex has over 25 years of representing clients in every aspect of family law, including annulment, separation, paternity, modification, enforcement, or dissolution of marriage. Alex is committed to ensuring that children enjoy their childhood, and he diligently works toward assisting his clients in this life-changing transition by protecting their and their child’s future.
Alex and his wife are committed to raising hardy, happy, well-adjusted kids and grandkids. He currently has five grandchildren, which are the highlight of his existence. Alex raised his family in Utah County, and they have enjoyed Utah’s famous snow by being members of the ski team. All his kids are accomplished swimmers and water polo players. Alex and his wife enjoy traveling, barbecuing outside in the winter, cycling, scootering, and raising Hawai’ian plumerias. Alex served as a proselyting missionary in Idaho. His kids tease him because they say he did not serve a “real” mission. His kids have served in Brazil, Ecuador, and Honduras.
