Located just over 30 miles north of Dallas sits McKinney, one of Texas’s fastest growing cities. According to the census data from 2010, McKinney is the 19th most populous city in all of Texas. But McKinney continues to grow. Population estimates from 2020 show that McKinney has just shy of 200,000 residents. Like most cities in Texas, it all started in the middle of the 19th century when pioneers began to settle there. Named after Collin McKinney, the man who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence, the town was incorporated a mere ten years after the first settlers began arriving.
Within McKinney lives a community who’s proud of their history and heritage. This pride is reflected in the multitude of historical markers, historical sites, and historical museums. Many residents and tourists alike enjoy visiting the Heard-Craig Center for the Arts, a home built in the 1900s that belonged to one of McKinney’s most influential families. Chestnut Square Heritage Village is also another attraction for those interested in the history of McKinney. Chestnut Square Heritage Village includes six historical homes, along with a wedding chapel, and general store. There’s also a replica of an old schoolhouse. Also located in McKinney is the Collin County Farm Museum, the Collin County History Museum, and the Play Street Museum.
