Denton has done a lot of growing since its incorporation in 1866. In fact, today, Denton is one of the most populous cities in the Lone Star State. Recent population estimates have named Denton as the 27th most populous city in the state of Texas. Named after one of the first settlers, John B. Denton, the settlement grew into the thriving city it is today. Present day, we know Denton as a college town with two universities that have nearly 45,000 students enrolled. Although the population is showing no signs of slowing down, that’s no problem for Denton: the bustling city stretches over 97 square miles, most of which is land.
