Bridgeport is a small town located in Wise County. Known as the Stagecoach Capital of Texas, Bridgeport stretches almost eight square miles and has a population of a little over 5,000 residents according to the most recent population estimates. Bridgeport is considered to be one of the largest towns in Wise County. Similar to most of the other towns in the Lone Star State, the story of Bridgeport began in the middle of the 19th century. However, unlike other towns in Texas, Bridgeport did not attract a large group of pioneers. Bridgeport began when William H. Hunt built a bridge across the Trinity River in the city we now know as Bridgeport.

When You’ve Been Served

If you’ve just been served divorce papers, CoilLaw is here for you. A lot of people feel shocked or blindsided by divorce papers. Many people who have been served knew their marriage was strained, but they felt surprised that their ex was so ready to throw in the towel. We’ve even seen cases where clients had absolutely no idea that their spouse was even thinking of divorce, let alone unhappy. Though seeing those divorce papers may be shocking, it’s important to remember that a petition for divorce is only a petition. It doesn’t mean your ex will get everything they’ve petitioned for. Although the divorce is likely going to happen, your spouse isn’t likely going to get everything they’ve requested in the petition–especially if you’ve hired an attorney to help you mitigate your losses.

Do You Really Need a Divorce Lawyer?

It’s not unheard of for one or both parties to completely forego a divorce lawyer. Though there are some cases where couples have been successful in getting divorced without an attorney, those cases are exceedingly rare. For the vast majority of divorcing couples, having a lawyer is a necessity. If one, or more of the following apply to you, you should at the bare minimum consult an attorney:

  • You have children with your spouse.
  • Your finances are tied with your spouse’s.
  • You and your spouse have large assets such as a home, or cars.
  • There’s a lot of conflict in the divorce.
  • You or your spouse will request child support.
  • You or your spouse will request alimony.
  • You and/or your spouse have a retirement account.

For most couples, a divorce lawyer is essential. Having an attorney handle your divorce can help ensure that your divorce decree is clearly written. Also, having an attorney who can advocate for your rights during the divorce can help mitigate your losses. A lot of family law attorneys spend a significant amount of time fixing poorly written and unclear divorce decrees. If you’re looking to save money, it will be a lot more cost-effective to ensure your divorce is done right the first time.
